Chapter Fifteen

Chastity quickly unlocked her front door, aiming to be in and out in a matter of seconds. All she needed to do was grab the divorce papers, which she’d forgotten that morning, and head back out the door to get to the bookstore as soon as she could. Ella would hold the fort down until she got there, which was fine, though Ella would be in a world of surprise when Chastity ran the book club idea by her.

Or maybe she’d wait. She wasn’t exactly in the mood anyhow. This day had taken a turn she hadn’t wanted to deal with, but the universe seemed insistent upon her dealing with these things.

Case in point: Chase’s parents were at her kitchen table. And he wasn’t there to deflect or run point.

It’d been awkward enough putting them in her childhood room last night. But this awkwardness took the cake. She stood there like a deer in headlights, blinking at the two of them like they might disappear if she did it enough times.

“Oh, we’re sorry, sweetie,” his mom said, standing from the table. “We’ll get out of your way. I’m sure you don’t want—”

“No! Stay!” Chastity insisted before she could think better of it. It was the proper host thing to do, but she also liked the way they filled her home. Having parents at her table, even if they weren’t her own, felt nice. “As long as you’d like. Honestly, it’s fine. Did you get anything to eat?”

“We poured bowls of cereal,” his dad told her as he scrolled on the screen of a tablet. “We used some bowls from last night and washed them again. Hope that was okay.”

“Of course. I’m glad you ate,” Chastity said. Then she unrooted herself from her spot and walked to the corner of the kitchen, where the manila envelope was. “I just came back for these.” She held the envelope in the air. “Chase will want them before he leaves, and I didn’t want him to have to come back here if he didn’t have the time.”

His mom nodded. “Right. Yeah. He told us about that. I thought maybe you’d signed them already and given them back.”

His dad continued to scroll on the tablet, but he was looking up at Chastity now instead.

Chastity wasn’t sure what to say to that. They’d been in a similar situation in the past. She’d gone to their house that time and dropped similar papers off—those ones had been complete with her signature though. These ones were still blank, but the situation still felt so close to the one before.

She shook her head. “No, not yet.” Then she gulped to push the knot in her throat down. “I haven’t really looked them over yet, but I’m sure everything’s fine,” she said before letting out a self-deprecating laugh. “Just like last time, right?”

Out of nowhere, a tear fell onto her cheek. She hadn’t even known that it was coming, but there it was. Burning a wet trail down her skin nonetheless.
